You won't believe it but school was cancelled for two days this week! They told the kids Wednesday that they would not be having school or Thursday or Friday. Want to know why . . . . . . snow? NOPE Ice? NOPE It was too cold. That's it. It was just "too cold". Today was a high of 20 and tomorrow is supposed to be a high of 12 with an overnight low of 3. Okay, so that is cold, but CLOSE SCHOOL? We really don't get that. Aren't they called "snow days" not "cold" days. There are a lot of interesting comments on fb about how rediculous it is. What a waste of a perfectly good school day. They don't let the kids go outside for recess anyway. Oh well, the kids are loving it (of course). My friend has been kind enough to watch Ryan and Amber, along with her own three boys and another girl (a friend for Amber). Now that is a true friend.
On a Ryan note:
It has been very dry (as it always is here in the winter) so I have the kids put Vaseline on their hands while they sleep at night and they wear socks over them. (Hey, don't laugh, it works) Anyway, after I tucked the kids in bed Ryan came down the stairs to ask what would happen if he got Vaseline in his eyes. We told him it might not feel great, but he would be fine. Mike whispered to me (we really should take the warning labels off of everything we give the boy).
Triops:
Last week Mike took Ryan to Hobby Lobby and he bought some triops eggs. Triops are some kind of little water bug. Anyway, he got a little bowl of water all set up, prepared the water with a special treatment that's included and they put a light down by the bowl to keep them warm enough (at least 73). Well, two of the little dudes managed to hatch, but the second day we lost the food. We figured Ryan misplaced it (he is often leaving things all over the house and I go around and collect them and put them in the basket). We made him look for it like crazy. It was almost a week later and we still hadn't found the food (we think the dogs probably ate it), but the little buggers were still swimming around. So, I made Mike take him back to the store to buy another set so we could feed them (rather than watch them die a slow, painful death of starvation). They are only $4 so not a big expense. We put the food in and added the new set of eggs as well (why not). Of course none of the new eggs hatched. Either the water wasn't right for babies or more likely they got eaten. Oh well. That's better than starving the two that we already have to death. Hopefully the eggs provided good nutrients for the two that are alive. To keep them warm enough we have the doors to the office closed and a light bulb by the tank 24/7. It is working, but seems a bit silly that we are trying to keep them at 73 degrees on the coldest days of the year. Not so smart. Mike keeps saying we should have waited until Summer. Oh well, Ryan is enjoying it and it has been something the whole family has had to help with, keeping the doors shut, keeping the dogs away from the bowl, feeding them and watching them grow. Who would have thought two little water bugs would be sooo much trouble (hee hee). At least their life span is only 20-90 days. So for now, it's kind of nice . . . as I sit here in the office typing on the computer and it is a warm 73 degrees in here, while the rest of the house is a cool 67-68 (hee hee). Why do you think I am spending my time writing about silly water bugs? I had to find some excuse to enjoy the warmest room in the house =) There's nothing else in here but the computer anyway. Here is a picture of a triops:
